VE Day Celebrations
Just because the country is on lock down, the Resident’s here, at Primley House, decided to carry on and commemorate the 75th Anniversary of V.E. Day in fine style, with a full day of celebrations.
Not in the way we originally planned, be we are nothing if not adaptable.
The morning was full of ‘reminiscing’ about the war years, looking at the various recruitment posters and inspirational posters with catchphrases that we still recognize to this day. ‘Make Do and Mend’ and ‘Dig for Victory’ being just two of them.
Ration books and clothing coupons were of great interest to remember how many coupons were needed for a complete outfit.
At lunch time we had a traditional ‘victory’ meal.
Fish, Chips and Peas on newspaper, of course. (Printed greaseproof paper) or Steak Pie followed by Blancmange
After lunch we sat in the sunshine amongst the bunting and Union Flags, to sing all the wartime songs, including ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ ‘White Cliffs of Dover’ and many more, and ending, of course with ‘We’ll Meet Again’
We had a High Tea with the best china in a traditional (socially distanced) street party.
